      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A pay rise is supposed to feel good. Then it lands, you check the payslip, and the extra money is smaller than the number in the letter. Part of that is normal: tax and National Insurance always take a slice. But over the last few years a quieter force has been at work too, and it has a name that sounds like a dull committee meeting and behaves like a pickpocket. It is called fiscal drag.</p>

      <h2>What fiscal drag actually is</h2>
      <p>Income tax in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is banded. You pay nothing on the first slice of income, the personal allowance, which sits at &pound;12,570. You pay 20 per cent on income above that up to &pound;50,270, then 40 per cent up to &pound;125,140, then 45 per cent on anything higher. Those numbers are the thresholds, and normally they creep up a little each year to keep pace with prices and wages.</p>
      <p>Since April 2021 they have not moved. They are frozen, and the freeze currently runs to April 2028. Wages, meanwhile, have carried on rising. When your pay goes up but the threshold stays still, more of your income crosses the line into a higher band. You are dragged into paying more tax without any rate ever going up. That is the whole trick, and it is why the freeze raises billions without a single Budget headline about a tax rise.</p>

      <h2>The number that surprises people</h2>
      <p>Say you earn &pound;49,000 and get a 4 per cent rise, about &pound;1,960. You might expect to keep most of it. But a chunk of that rise pushes you over &pound;50,270, and every pound above that line is taxed at 40 per cent rather than 20, plus National Insurance on top. The headline rise looks generous. The take-home version is a good deal thinner.</p>
      <p>The effect is sharpest around the &pound;50,270 line, and brutal in one specific place. Between &pound;100,000 and &pound;125,140 the personal allowance is withdrawn by &pound;1 for every &pound;2 you earn. That withdrawal creates an effective tax rate of 60 per cent on that band, sometimes higher once other things are counted.       <h2>Why it matters more the longer it lasts</h2>
      <p>A freeze is gentle in year one and heavy by year seven. Each year of pay growth drags a few more people over each threshold, and once you are over it you stay over it. The Office for Budget Responsibility, which scores the public finances, has repeatedly described the threshold freeze as one of the largest revenue raisers of recent years, precisely because it compounds quietly while nobody has to vote for a higher rate.</p>
      <p>It also catches people who never thought of themselves as high earners. The &pound;50,270 higher-rate line was once firmly middle-of-the-road for a senior nurse, a teacher with responsibilities, or an engineer a few years into a career. Frozen in place while salaries climb, it now sweeps in far more of them, and with it comes the loss of things tied to that threshold, such as the tapering of Child Benefit for some households.</p>

      <h2>What you can actually do</h2>
      <p>You cannot unfreeze a threshold, but you can control where some of your income lands. Pension contributions are the classic lever: money paid into a pension comes off your taxable income, so a contribution can pull you back under a threshold and rescue that 40 or 60 per cent band. Salary sacrifice arrangements, where you swap gross pay for a pension contribution or another benefit, do the same job and trim the National Insurance bill as well. If your income is close to &pound;100,000, this is worth real attention rather than a shrug.</p>
      <p>None of this is a reason to turn down a pay rise. More money is more money, even after tax. The point is to see the rise clearly, so the gap between the letter and the payslip is a decision you understand rather than a nasty surprise.       <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A-level results arrive the same way every year: as a shower of percentages. The share of entries awarded top grades, the proportion who passed, the year-on-year change, all of it delivered in figures with a per cent sign attached. This year the headline number was that A and A* grades edged up again, to 28.5 per cent of entries across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, from 28.3 per cent last year. It is a tiny move, and it is a perfect example of the one mistake that slips into results coverage every single August.</p>

      <h2>Per cent and percentage points are not the same thing</h2>
      <p>Top grades went from 28.3 per cent to 28.5 per cent. It is tempting to call that a rise of "0.2 per cent". It is not. It is a rise of 0.2 <em>percentage points</em>, which is a different measurement, and the gap between the two is the whole story.</p>
      <p>A percentage point is just the plain difference between two percentages: 28.5 minus 28.3 is 0.2 percentage points. A per cent change asks something else entirely: how big is that step <em>relative to where you started</em>? Nought point two on top of 28.3 is 0.2 divided by 28.3, which comes out at about 0.7 per cent. So the same movement is "up 0.2 percentage points" or "up roughly 0.7 per cent" depending on which question you are answering, and both are far smaller than the "0.2 per cent" a careless summary might reach for.       <h2>What "top grades" actually measures</h2>
      <p>The figure everyone reaches for is the percentage of entries graded A or A*. Notice it is a share of <em>entries</em>, not of students: a pupil sitting three subjects counts three times, once per paper. Around 40 per cent of 18-year-olds in England take A-levels each summer, so the number describes how the grades fell across all those papers, not how many teenagers had a good day.</p>
      <p>That share has had a turbulent few years. In the last summer of normal exams before the pandemic, roughly a quarter of entries earned an A or A*. When exams were cancelled and grades came from teacher assessment instead, the figure leapt, peaking at around 44 to 45 per cent in 2021. Since then the regulator has steered grading back towards the old standard, which is why the top-grade share now sits in the high twenties. This year's students are part of that story in another way too: most of them were in Year 7 and Year 8 during the 2020 and 2021 disruption.       <h2>The base underneath the percentage</h2>
      <p>A percentage is only half a fact. The other half is what it is a percentage <em>of</em>, and that base moves too. The number of entries rises and falls with the size of the eighteen-year-old population and with which subjects are popular, so an identical percentage can sit on top of very different totals from one year to the next. That matters this summer, because alongside the grades a record number of students were confirmed a place at university, with around 41 per cent of UK 18-year-olds having applied by the end of June. A steady percentage of a larger cohort still means more people through the door. Whenever a percentage is quoted with no count behind it, that is the question worth asking: per cent of how many?</p>

      <h2>UCAS points play a different game</h2>
      <p>Results day comes with a second number system that trips people up in the opposite direction: UCAS tariff points. These are not percentages at all. Each grade is worth a fixed points score, and an offer is usually written as a points total or a run of grades. It is easy to assume points scale like percentages, but they do not map onto them neatly, which is why turning an offer into the grades that satisfy it is awkward to do in your head.       <h2>Behind the percentages sit real papers</h2>
      <p>It is easy to treat the national figures as if they descend from on high, but every one of them is built from individual scripts and grade boundaries. That was in sharp focus this year, with the regulator in England saying it was closely monitoring the marking of an A-level maths paper that students and parents argued was noticeably harder than usual. It is a useful reminder that a grade boundary is itself a percentage decision, quietly nudged so that a tougher paper does not unfairly punish the students who sat it.       <h2>Reading the day well</h2>
      <p>None of this changes what the results mean for the student holding the envelope. But it changes how much you should trust a headline. When the coverage says grades are "up" or "down", check three things: whether the change is in percentage points or per cent, what the base is, and which year is being used for comparison. Do that and the numbers stop being a blur and start telling you something real. Everything else about the day, the celebrations and the clearing and the retakes, is easier to think about once the maths is straight.</p>

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Everyone knows the numbers. Two thousand calories a day for a woman, two and a half thousand for a man. They are printed on the side of cereal boxes and repeated so often they feel like a law of physics. They are not. They are a rough average, and your own daily burn can sit a long way from either figure depending on how big you are, how old you are and how much you move about. The good news is that working out your real number takes about a minute.</p>

      <h2>Most of your calories are gone before you move</h2>
      <p>The biggest surprise for most people is how little of their daily energy goes on exercise. The largest slice by far is your basal metabolic rate, or BMR: the calories your body spends just keeping you alive and idling. Your heart beats, your lungs work, your brain hums along, your body holds its temperature, cells repair themselves. For most adults that background running cost is somewhere around 60 to 70 per cent of the whole day's total, and you spend it lying completely still.</p>
      <p>You can estimate BMR with a formula that has held up well since it was published in 1990, the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. It uses your weight, height, age and sex. For men it is ten times your weight in kilograms, plus 6.25 times your height in centimetres, minus five times your age, plus five. For women the last number is minus 161 instead of plus five. It looks fiddly written out, but it is just addition, and it is the engine inside most calorie tools, including the <a href="/tdee-calculator/">TDEE calculator</a>.</p>

      <h2>Then you add the moving about</h2>
      <p>BMR is you switched off. To get the figure that actually matters, your total daily energy expenditure or TDEE, you multiply BMR by an activity factor. A desk job with little exercise sits around 1.2. Light activity a few days a week is about 1.375. Training hard most days pushes towards 1.7 and beyond. Somebody who is on their feet all day on a building site burns in a different league to somebody who commutes by car to a chair.</p>
      <p>This is why two people of the same weight can need very different amounts of food. A tall, young, active man might genuinely burn well over 3,000 calories a day. A smaller, older, sedentary person might sit comfortably under 1,600. Feeding both of them the same 2,000 calorie template and expecting the same result was never going to work, and it does not.</p>

      <h2>Why the number drifts over time</h2>
      <p>Your TDEE is not fixed for life. It falls slowly as you age, partly because muscle, which is metabolically busy, tends to fade if you do nothing to keep it. It changes when you lose or gain weight, because a smaller body costs less to run, which is one of the reasons weight loss slows down the further you go. And it responds to how you live, not just how you train. Fidgeting, standing, walking to the shop, taking the stairs: this everyday, non-exercise movement adds up to more than most gym sessions, and it is where a lot of the day-to-day variation between people actually hides.</p>

      <h2>What the number is good for</h2>
      <p>Knowing your TDEE turns vague calorie advice into something you can use. Eat roughly at your TDEE and your weight tends to hold steady. Eat consistently below it and you lose, above it and you gain. That is the whole of the arithmetic, even if appetite, sleep, hormones and the sheer difficulty of measuring food make the day-to-day messier than the sum suggests.</p>
      <p>A single figure will not capture all of that, and no formula should be treated as gospel. Treat your TDEE as a well-informed starting point, watch what actually happens over a few weeks, and adjust.       <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ask a British adult how much they weigh and you will almost always get an answer in stones. Twelve stone seven. Fourteen stone dead. It rolls off the tongue. Now ask the same person the price of petrol, the weight of a bag of flour or the distance to the next town, and the units scatter: litres, grams, miles. The bathroom scales are one of the last corners of daily life where the old system did not just survive metrication, it dug in and refused to leave.</p>

      <h2>A stone is fourteen pounds, and that is the odd part</h2>
      <p>One stone equals fourteen pounds, which works out at a shade over 6.35 kilograms. Fourteen is a peculiar number to build a unit on. It is not ten, it is not twelve, it does not divide neatly into anything modern. That awkwardness is a fossil from the wool trade. For centuries different goods were weighed in stones of different sizes, and a stone of wool was not the same as a stone of cheese or lead. Medieval statutes gradually pinned the wool stone at fourteen pounds to bring order to a market where a fuzzy unit meant a cheated buyer, and that fourteen-pound version is the one that stuck for people.</p>
      <p>So the stone you read on the scales is a survivor of a trading standard set to stop merchants arguing about wool. It has nothing to do with the metric system, which is exactly why converting it feels clumsy. Kilograms are decimal, so half a kilogram is 0.5. Stones are not, so half a stone is seven pounds, and the leftover pounds never line up with anything.       <h2>How the stone dodged the metric sweep</h2>
      <p>Britain has been going metric in fits and starts since the 1960s. The <a href="https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1985/72" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Weights and Measures Act 1985</a> and the rules that followed pushed shops towards selling in grams and kilograms, and today goods on a scale in a shop are weighed the metric way. Yet the law was mostly aimed at trade, at what happens when money changes hands over a quantity of something. Your own body weight is not a transaction. Nobody is buying you by the kilogram, so nobody had to force the change, and the habit simply carried on.</p>
      <p>Culture did the rest. Doctors' notes and medical charts moved to kilograms, but conversations did not follow. People think in the units they grew up hearing, and a target of losing a stone lands with a weight, so to speak, that losing 6.35 kilograms never quite matches. The stone stayed because it was personal, informal and never really regulated out of the places people used it most.</p>

      <h2>Two islands, two habits</h2>
      <p>It is worth noting who kept the stone and who did not. In the United States the stone barely registers as a unit for body weight at all; Americans give their weight in pounds alone, so a person is 175 pounds, not twelve stone five. Australia, Canada and New Zealand went the other way and largely settled into kilograms. Britain and Ireland ended up in a curious middle lane, fluent in kilograms on paper and stones in the pub, translating between the two without really noticing they are doing it.</p>
      <p>There is no grand plan to abolish the stone, and no great appetite to defend it either. It endures because it is comfortable, and because the maths of switching mid-sentence is annoying enough that a quick converter is easier than retraining a nation's ear. Fourteen pounds to the stone, a little over six kilograms, and a history that runs back to arguments over wool: not bad for a unit that officially should have faded away decades ago.</p>
